These vegan Nikes are 90% recycled

Nike Space Hippie - 90% recycled materials in this new vegan sneaker design - The Air Vegan for Vegan Good Life
Nike just launched this “Space Hippie” line. Kicking the program off is 4 silhouettes made from scrap materials found on factory floors, another bold attempt at circular design. With up to 90% of the upper materials sourced from recycled matter and no sacrifices made in the design process, this shoe fuels our belief that Nike can lead the industry into a new direction.

Dang, this is what I’ve been talking about and dreaming about since I started my Instagram channel Air Vegan over two years ago! This is Nike innovation at its finest. I don’t know where to start!

"No sacrifices have been made in regards to the looks of the shoe."

Nike just launched this “Space Hippie” line. Kicking the program off is four silhouettes made from scrap materials found on factory floors, another bold attempt at circular design. The shoe achieves some of the lowest carbon footprint scores that Nike has ever accomplished and there are no sacrifices made in regards to the looks of the shoe. In my humble opinion, they are just as ambitious as any other shoe on the market, if not more.

Nike designer Noah Murphy-Reinhertz broke down the design of the Space Hipppie 02 as follows: “The basis for the engineered knits that form the Space Hippie uppers is created using what we call 'Space Waste Yarn'. These yarns are made from 100% recycled material–including recycled plastic water bottles, t-shirts and yarn scraps. Combined with the other elements of the Space Hippie 02, we get an upper that is 90% recycled content by weight."

"These yarns are made from 100% recycled plastic water bottles, t-shirts and yarn scraps."

"For cushioning," Murphy-Reinhertz continues, "Space Hippie uses factory scraps from the production of the Vaporfly 4% and reprocesses that ZoomX foam in a way that uses about half the Co2e as typical Nike foams."

People often ask why I have such a strong allegiance to Nike. (My Air Vegan Instagram account is not a sponsored account, and I have never received free product.) It’s because of projects like this! Nike hasalways lead on innovation, and this type of design thinking is what the sneaker industry needs, not as a pet project, but as the mandate for all of us to accept if we want to lessen our impact on the environment.

"The future of sneakers is vegan–and it can be circular, too."

I firmly believe that Nike can lead the industry into a new direction through innovation and leadership on all things sustainability.

I’ll be posting about these plenty on my Instagram and I hope to get my hands on a pair asap. Stay tuned for more, and big props to the design team that brought these to life. Also, s/o to the sneaker blogs and writers who push this story.

    1. Hey there, the interwebs is your friend, give it a quick search. All we know is that these were a highly anticipated drop and sold out internationally very fast. If you still want to cop, be warned that prices have gone up and that bidding on your fav on StockX is probably the only real option at this point in time. Or you keep an eye out on future releases, there are more colorways and Space Hippie models coming out.

If you want to keep up to date on all of this, follow our man @airvegan on Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/theairvegan/) or just keep hanging out here 😉

    1. Hey Claudio, these were a highly anticipated drop and sold out internationally in a heartbeat. If you want to still get your hands (or rather feet) on a pair, bidding on your fav on StockX is probably the only real option now. Or you keep an eye out on future releases, there are more colorways and Space Hippie models coming out, they just recently did a joint venture with Converse, a Space Hippie Chuck Taylor. So we’ll definitely see more of the hippies in the future.

  1. Cool kicks

Nike please find a way to make a pair in USA like New Balance does with it’s high end running sneakers. Also, with union labor.

Thanks Nike for environment friendly shoes concept and hopefully they could be worker/country favorable.

    1. Interesting point, Jimmy. It’s definitely intriguing to look into alternative approaches when it comes to where production takes place, especially when with high-end styles, the price point is a bit more steep anyways and customers are willing to pay for union labor when purchasing, too. We do, however, also think that making a difference in the working conditions in i.E. Asian countries is a very wholesome goal and something big players like the Nikes of the world could and should look into. A good way to create change where today’s industry experts are — and where it’s most likely very much needed. Thanks for your comment.

      Cheers, Team VGL
