Although we’ve been enjoying many warm, sunny days lately this spring in Berlin, we know to always have a proper raincoat at the ready. For this month’s Editor’s Pick, new Vegan Good Life managing editor Cort shares his appreciation for Stutterheim, the Swedish raincoat brand who seems to effortlessly combine both function and beauty in each collection they create. It’s no coincidence that just in time for our shoot along the Spree in Berlin Friedrichshain, the sky turned overcast and grey, with a few drops of rain mixed in for good measure.
I’ve loved the Stutterheim brand for many years and was proud to introduce it to our team. In fact, my Stutterheim raincoat (an original rubberized cotton from their very first collection) has endured many seasons of wet weather—from the rain in Amsterdam to the fog in San Francisco – and still looks good. And Stutterheim’s collaborations, with the likes of Novesta to introduce a water-repellent canvas sneaker line or with Marni and Henrik Vibskov to bring color and pattern to the collections, are just plain cool.
What equally draws us to the brand though, is its clear purpose: Swedish melancholy at its driest.™ (Have you ever read such a good tagline?!) Stutterheim has found a way to honor its heritage and to consider melancholy as a source of creativity and perseverance.
Through their creative lab, The Stutterheim Clinic, they explore their darkest thoughts and experiment with their brand’s take on the world. We can relate. Sometimes we vegans know too much. The immense and pervasive animal exploitation and suffering in our society gives us a deep and enduring melancholy. Yet, we don’t let it be a static sadness.
Swedish melancholy at its driest™
Rather, it fuels our creativity too, and gives us a clear sense of purpose as we continue to explore and offer our unique plant-based counterculture perspective. Perhaps one day we’ll join Stutterheim in their lab and see what a new collaboration or venture could be. (Or even convince them to use vegan materials in their accessories too. Baby steps…)
A Stutterheim raincoat is perfect for the next seasonal shift. So too is the brand, as we look for inspiration toward an eventual societal shift.
